Ithaca High School Outreach Event

Professor Ferrari and two of her PhD students, Jake Gemerek, and Taylor Clawson, visited three sections of Mrs. Gauri Kolhatkar’s 9th-Grade Honors Geometry class. The purpose of this outreach was to expose many students to real-world applications of geometry and demonstrate how such fundamental skills are used in fun and exciting new technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and quadrotors. A demonstration highlighting collision avoidance using biologically-inspired methods was shown to the students with a small-scale autonomous quadrator navigating around obstacles. A virtual reality demonstration allowed the students to not only experience VR, but use it to engage in human-robot interaction and collaboration for simple tasks. Pictures from the event demonstrations are shown below, along with the video and slides from the brief discussion by Professor Ferrari.
